Drip Irrigation Systems
- Can you order preassembled systems?
No, but we sell all of the components and when you order a system, we make sure you have everything needed to set up a system based on your specifications. We also have detailed instructions with illustrations to help you put it together. These systems are fairly easy to put together, but if you need help, give us a call and we can walk you through the setup.
- If I tell you the type of crop and the size of the area needing drip irrigation, could you design me a system?
Yes, we can. There are a few other questions we would have, but we can design a system specifically for your application.
- The example you showed for setting up a drip irrigation system in a high tunnel for only $177.76, how large is the high tunnel in this example?
The high tunnel in the example is a 30' by 72', round-style high tunnel. It includes enough drip tape for ten rows, the sub main, the hose bib assembly and the garden hose attachment.
- Can fertigation be added to a drip tape system?
Yes, we can add fertigation to any system. Fertigation systems, like a Dosatron® Fertilizer Injector, are sensitive to large particles, so we recommend installing it in-line after the water passes through a filter. It would be just like any other irrigation system essentially at that point.
- How do you determine the amount of drip tape you will need?
To determine the amount of drip tape you will need, measure the length of your rows and multiply by the number of rows you have. This will equal the length of drip tape that you will need. Another important thing to consider is the width of your row. Wider rows require two or three runs of drip tape.
- What is the drip tape made of?
Our drip tape is made of polyethylene plastic.
- How many seasons will the drip tape last?
Drip tape will last a couple years. It is usually replaced due to normal wear and tear.
- What size lines do you carry?
We carry 1/2" and 3/4" lines. We do not carry 5/8" lines, but we can supply fittings for 5/8" lines.
Emitters and Sprayers
- What are the benefits of drip emitters versus sprayers?
Sprayers spray the surface of the soil and drip emitters slowly seep water into the soil. A sprayer will cover a larger area but at the cost of degrading soil structure, displacing fertilizer and disrupting plant tissue at the base of the stem. In some cases, this isn't a big deal, certain plants can handle a spray stake. Plants that are more delicate would benefit more from a drip emitter. Drip emitters are also more efficient. Spray stakes introduce water to the air before it gets to the plant and some water will be lost through evaporation.
- What types of spray emitters do you carry?
For the emitter assemblies we offer three different kinds of drip stakes and two different kinds of spray stakes. Both of our spray stake options have optional off positions and our 3.2 GPM Spray Stake Assembly has three adjustable settings.
- How many drip emitters do you recommend for a newly planted tree?
It depends on the tree and size of the root ball. We recommend two to four stakes.
- As the trees grow larger how do you determine the number of drip emitters?
It depends on the water requirements of the trees. To determine the number of drip emitters you need, you will need to know how much water each tree needs per day. All of our spray stakes, drip stakes and emitters have specific GPM values. If you determine how much water your tree requires, we can help you size a system appropriate for your needs.
- What brands of drip emitters and sprayers do you carry?
We carry Netafim products.
- How does Netafim compare to other brands like Raindrip?
As far as life expectancy, it is all the same—same amount of time, same reliability. The connections are virtually the same. It is really the company you work with, the tech support you get behind the product and making sure the products are sized properly for your application. I wouldn't worry too much about the brand.
- Is it possible to have a 275-gallon container as a water source as opposed to well or city water?
In remote applications where it is tough to plumb pipe out to the field, vertical water containers are great. A drip irrigation system can be done with gravity, but something that is important to keep in mind is the PSI needed to run water through the system. Every 2.7' of vertical distance equals 1 PSI. The required PSI for drip irrigation is 10, so you would need to have your container about 30' off the ground to make it work.
- How clean does the water need to be?
We recommend that you filter the water before it goes through the system. This will prevent the system from clogging. We recommend a filter that is at least 130 microns. To put it in perspective, your house probably uses a filter with 1 micron. For drip tape, you don't need anything that small.
- Are flush valves required?
It is a good idea to have flush valves at the end of your sub main lines,as well as your rows. It allows you to easily unblock clogs and winterize your system if you're in an area where temperatures get below freezing.
- How do you clean drip tape at the end of the season?
You should not have to clean the drip tape. You can flush it at the end of the season, but it is not necessary. To flush the drip tape you will need to install a 1/4 turn valve at the end of each row and run water through the system to unclog any emitters and remove any loose debris. Then just roll up the drip tape and store it until next season.
- How do you prevent squirrels from gnawing at the irrigation tube?
If you are having problems with squirrels gnawing on the irrigation tube, we recommend burying the line. The second option would be adding some pest control to your field. We have a wide range of pest control products including DuraMesh™ fencing and netting, humane traps and decoys.
